Video teleconference with Michael Brito, Edelman Digital

  1. On Wednesday, Oct. 17, Michael Brito, senior vice president of social business planning for Edelman Digital, skyped with my COM 400: Social Media U Need 2 Know class. As a whole we listened to a 45-minute presentation on how companies can make the switch to become more social media savvy and what steps businesses take to achieve this modern way of communicating with employees and consumers. There was time for a question-and-answer period, following his talk that provided good examples of companies that are doing a good job integrating social media and others that need some work.
    Brito was enthusiastic about the social business transition; you could see the passion in his face. While working as a professional in the social business industry, Brito completed one book and is now working on his second. His first book entitled, “Smart Business, Social Business—A Playbook for Social Media in Your Organization,” was published in 2011 and led Brito to writing a second book on the same topic that will be released shortly.
    Brito talked about what a company needs to do to engage both internally—employees—and externally—customers/consumers. He said that the key to running a successful social business is finding a balance between the two. Another major topic of discussion was how a social business adapts to a constantly changing society in terms of things such as multiple screens and sizes for the same piece of information.
    He said it takes a lot of time and effort to switch to a social business, but it’s worth it in the end. His best piece of advice for companies that are attempting the switch is to slowly and gradually make the transition.
    Overall the video teleconference with Brito was beneficial and I learned a lot about the importance of using social media, this day in age. Here is my storify of the event.

    Very well done! The Storify recap was very strong and covered the majority of the conversation. It will definitely act as a great reference point. I’m curious to see his thoughts on the ever-evolving social media landscape in his next book. Do you think Apple will eventually adopt a social media plan?

      I do think Apple will start to implement social media in the future. Right now, they don’t have to, but eventually I think they will. For me social media is Apple, if that makes sense. I used Apple devices—iPhone, iPad and MacBook—to create my presence on social media. Without such easy devices to maneuver, I don’t think I would use social media as much.

    I think the most important lesson about using social media this day in age is to be consistent across every platform. I think I will try to link my social media sites a little better. For example, I will try to promote my personal website on my Facebook and Twitter pages better.
